If there is known contanimation or sediment then a cold water in-line prefilter is recommended (about $40). If the household has excessive "hard water," (more than 10) then this unit is not recommended, as most "water softening" treatments add excess calcium/sodium which can build up in the ionizer unit. These units are designed to take the pre-exisiting amounts of alkaline minerals in "normal" tap water and concentrate them into the upper pH ranges.
